Rather, the wealth of a nation consists in the amount of the conveniences that are enjoyed by its inhabitants. My suggestion is that the first group of passages show that Locke subscribed to the view that exports of consumable goods should exceed imports while the second group of passages show that Locke subscribed to the view that ultimately the riches of a nation does not consist in its stock of silver or gold. Let’s look at some passages from “Some Considerations” that most support the claim that Locke was a mercantilist and then some passages in which Locke seems to distance himself from mercantilism. But he was not a mercantilist in the sense of taking a nation’s wealth to consist in the magnitude of its stock of silver and good.” “Locke was a mercantilist in the sense of favoring an excess of exports of consumable commodities over imports of consumable commodities. ![]()

The book, published long before Robert Ballard discovered the real resting place of the Titanic, was an unqualified success, in part because interest in the Titanic disaster never wanes. He may never have become so popular if not for “Raise the Titanic,” a 1976 novel that introduced most readers to Pitt and launched Cussler's career. These days, Cussler's portrayals of chivalry seem outdated and perhaps offensive, but he continues to churn out books, maintaining a consistent presence on the best-seller lists. It was so sadly predictable that you could guess what was going to happen 30 pages ahead of yourself. It really isn't a very impressive writing style.Īnother problem with this book is that is has the exact same plot progression as the books preceding it. So you get the story from the perspective of one person, but that one person knows all the details and thoughts of every person around him or her. What makes it worse is that Heimerdinger appears to have one writing style, and that is first person omniscient. The problem is so bad that he has to use different type sets to distinguish between narrators and I still had a hard time telling them apart. But he doesn't do a very good job of giving the narrators different voices. Heimerdinger split up the action in these books which required the use of two narrators. So let me just make it clear that this is a terrible book. ![]() I was kind of disappointed that there weren't more. What is the value of marriage today? Why do couples still marry in church? These are some of the questions Forster asks as she weaves the personal experience of forty years through the stories of three wives who have long fascinated her. Forster traces the shift in emphasis from submission to partnership, first through the marriage of one unconventional American, Fanny Osbourne, to Robert Louis Stevenson, in the late nineteenth century and then through that of Jennie Lee to Aneurin Bevan in the 1930s. Between these two marriages is a huge gulf in which the notion of marriage changed immeasurably. In 1960, Margaret Forster married her school sweetheart Hunter Davies in a London Registry Office - and interpreted the role very differently. ![]() In 1848 Mary Moffatt became the wife of the missionary and explorer David Livingstone - and her obedience and devotion eventually killed her.
